7 Things You May Miss About California After Moving to Hudson Bend, Texas

by Amanda Zito

What will you miss about California after moving to Hudson Bend, Texas?

You might miss the beach, cooler summers, mountains, your favorite restaurants, and being close to family and friends.

But moving to Hudson Bend also means discovering a different way of life near Lake Travis.

I moved from California to Texas myself, and I still travel back to Southern California regularly.

And while there are many things I enjoy about living here, I'm not going to pretend there aren't things I miss about California.

Every move comes with trade-offs.

The important thing is knowing what to expect before you pack up and make the move.

If you're thinking about relocating from Southern California to Hudson Bend or the Lake Travis area, here are seven things you may miss and what you can look forward to instead.

1. Being Close to the Beach

One of the biggest things you may miss about California is the ocean.

Depending on where you lived in Southern California, spending a day at the beach might have been an easy weekend activity.

In Hudson Bend, you won't have the Pacific Ocean nearby.

But you will have Lake Travis.

Living near Lake Travis means you can enjoy boating, swimming, fishing, waterfront restaurants, and beautiful sunsets.

For many people, being close to the lake becomes one of their favorite parts of living here.

One thing to know: Lake Travis is not always at the same water level.

It's a reservoir used for water supply and flood control. The lake level changes depending on rainfall, drought, and other conditions.

If you're thinking about buying a waterfront home, it's important to understand how those changes could affect your property, dock, or lake access.

You can check lake levels through the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA).

2. California's Cooler Summer Weather

If you're coming from coastal Southern California, Texas summers may take some getting used to.

Summers in the Austin and Lake Travis area can be very hot, with temperatures sometimes reaching 100 degrees or higher.

And unlike some parts of California, the humidity can make it feel even warmer.

If you're moving from the Inland Empire or High Desert, you're probably already familiar with hot summers.

But the humidity in Central Texas may feel different.

The good news?

You can still enjoy outdoor activities. You may just need to change when you do them.

Early mornings, evenings, pools, and lake activities become part of your summer routine.

And once the weather cools down, there are plenty of opportunities to spend time outside.

My advice: If you're considering moving here, try visiting during the summer. You'll get a better idea of what the weather actually feels like.

3. Mountains and Different Scenery

One thing California offers is a lot of variety.

You can spend time at the beach, visit the mountains, or head to the desert without traveling too far.

That's something you may miss after moving to Texas.

Hudson Bend has a different kind of beauty.

You'll find rolling hills, mature trees, limestone landscapes, and beautiful views of Lake Travis.

The Texas Hill Country also offers scenic drives, hiking trails, parks, and outdoor activities.

But if you enjoy snowboarding, skiing, or spending time in the mountains, you'll need to travel farther.

What to expect: Hudson Bend offers beautiful natural surroundings, but the scenery is different from what you may be used to in California.

And that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's just something to consider when deciding where you want to live.

4. Your Favorite California Restaurants and Food

Let's talk about food.

If you've lived in California for years, you probably have your favorite restaurants, taco shops, and places you visit regularly.

And you may not find the exact same things after moving to Texas.

California-style Mexican food and Texas-style Tex-Mex are different.

You'll also notice differences in restaurant options, grocery stores, and local food favorites.

Hudson Bend is a smaller community, so you'll likely find yourself driving to nearby Lakeway, Bee Cave, or other parts of Austin for more dining and shopping options.

But Texas has plenty of food to enjoy, too.

Barbecue, Tex-Mex, local restaurants, and waterfront dining are all part of the experience.

My advice: Give yourself time to explore.

You may miss some of your California favorites, but you might discover a few new ones here.

5. Being Close to Family and Friends

For many people, this can be one of the hardest parts of moving.

It's not always about the weather, beaches, or restaurants.

Sometimes, it's simply being farther away from the people you love.

If most of your family and friends are still in California, visiting them may now mean booking a flight or planning a longer trip.

I still travel back to Southern California regularly, so I understand that staying connected is something you need to plan for.

And if your family visits you in Texas, the layout of your home may become more important.

For example, you might want:

  • An extra bedroom for guests

  • A separate living area

  • A home with enough space for family gatherings

  • A comfortable outdoor area where everyone can spend time together

These are things worth thinking about when searching for a home.

My advice: Think about how often you'll travel back to California and how often family may visit you.

That can help you choose a home that fits your lifestyle.

6. Having Shopping and Restaurants Close By

If you're moving from a busy California city, you may be used to having everything nearby.

Grocery stores, shopping centers, restaurants, and other services might have been just a few minutes away.

Hudson Bend is different.

It's an unincorporated community in Travis County, located along Lake Travis.

While there are local businesses nearby, many residents drive to Lakeway, Bee Cave, or other surrounding areas for shopping and errands.

Depending on where you live in Hudson Bend, you'll want to plan for additional driving.

Some properties may also have features that are less common in California suburbs, such as septic systems instead of public sewer connections.

But there's another side to this.

Many people move to Hudson Bend because they want more space, a quieter setting, or a home closer to the lake.

You may trade some convenience for a different lifestyle.

My advice: Before buying a home, spend time driving around the area.

Visit the grocery stores, restaurants, schools, and other places you'll use regularly.

This will help you decide whether the location works for your everyday routine.

7. California's Property Tax System

This is something California homeowners should understand before moving to Texas.

California and Texas handle property taxes differently.

In California, Proposition 13 generally limits increases in a property's assessed value to 2% per year, unless certain changes occur.

That can make property taxes more predictable for homeowners who have owned their properties for many years.

Texas doesn't have a state income tax, but property taxes work differently.

Property values are regularly appraised, and local taxing authorities set their tax rates.

Texas does offer a homestead exemption for eligible homeowners.

As of 2026, the general school district homestead exemption is $140,000. Qualifying homesteads also generally receive a 10% annual limit on increases in appraised value, subject to certain rules.

You can learn more through the Texas Comptroller's Office.

Here's what I recommend: Don't compare homes based only on their purchase prices.

Look at the estimated property taxes, insurance, monthly payment, and other costs before making a decision.

And if you're selling a California home and moving to Texas, speak with a tax professional about how the move may affect your situation.

What You May Enjoy More About Living in Hudson Bend

Now that we've talked about what you might miss, let's look at the other side.

There are also plenty of reasons people consider moving from California to Hudson Bend.

Depending on your lifestyle and what you're looking for, you may enjoy:

  • Living near Lake Travis and having more opportunities for lake activities

  • Homes with larger lots or more outdoor space

  • Beautiful Hill Country views

  • A quieter neighborhood setting

  • Exploring new restaurants, parks, and nearby communities

  • Living in a state without a personal state income tax

Of course, not every home or neighborhood offers the same features.

That's why choosing the right location matters just as much as choosing the right house.

How to Prepare for Your Move From California to Hudson Bend

If you're seriously thinking about relocating, here are a few things I recommend doing before you buy.

1. Visit during different seasons.

2. Spend time in Hudson Bend.

Don't just visit downtown Austin. Explore Hudson Bend, Lakeway, Bee Cave, and the surrounding Lake Travis communities.

3. Test your everyday drive.

Check how long it takes to get to work, schools, grocery stores, and the airport. Traffic can make a difference.

4. Think about your lifestyle.

Do you want a lakefront home, a larger backyard, a quieter street, or something closer to shopping?

5. Compare the full cost of living.

Look beyond home prices. Consider property taxes, insurance, utilities, maintenance, and travel expenses.

The more you know before moving, the easier it will be to decide whether Hudson Bend is the right fit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Moving From California to Hudson Bend

Is Hudson Bend, Texas, a good place for Californians to move?

It can be, especially if you enjoy being near the water, outdoor activities, and a quieter setting.

But it depends on what you're looking for.

If having shopping, restaurants, and entertainment within walking distance is important, some parts of Hudson Bend may not be the best fit.

How far is Hudson Bend from Austin?

Hudson Bend is located northwest of Austin, near Lake Travis.

It's roughly 16 miles from downtown Austin, depending on your starting point.

Drive times can vary based on traffic and your exact location.

Does Lake Travis always have water?

Yes, Lake Travis is a reservoir, but water levels can change significantly.

During drought conditions, lower water levels may affect boat ramps, docks, and lake access.

Before buying waterfront property, review the lake's history and how changes in water levels could affect that specific home.

Is living in Hudson Bend cheaper than California?

It depends on where you're moving from and the type of home you're buying.

Some buyers may find homes with more space for their budget, but property taxes, insurance, and other expenses can be different.

It's important to compare your total monthly expenses rather than focusing only on home prices.

Will I regret moving from California to Texas?

That's a personal decision.

Some people love the change, while others discover they miss certain things about California more than they expected.

The best way to prepare is to visit, explore different neighborhoods, and understand the lifestyle before making the move.
