What You'll Love About Hudson Bend After Living in California

by Amanda Zito

What do Californians love about living in Hudson Bend, Texas?

For a lot of people, it’s the lifestyle.

Lake Travis is close enough to be part of your regular week. You have more space, beautiful sunsets, real seasons, wildlife, and a quieter pace than many parts of Southern California.

I made the move from California to Texas myself. And while things like taxes, home prices, and property size matter, those aren’t always the things you notice most after you move.

It’s the everyday stuff.

Watching the sunset over the lake on a random weeknight.

Seeing deer walk through the neighborhood.

Being able to enjoy the water without turning it into an all-day trip.

That’s what this post is really about: what daily life in Hudson Bend can feel like after living in California.

The Lake Becomes Part of Your Everyday Life

If you lived inland in Southern California, going to the beach usually took some planning.

Traffic.

Parking.

Packing everything you needed.

And depending on where you lived, you could easily spend hours just getting there and back.

Hudson Bend feels very different.

Lake Travis surrounds much of the community, so you see the water while driving through the neighborhood, near local parks, and around many homes.

Instead of planning an entire Saturday around the water, you may head out for an hour in the evening.

You can paddleboard in the morning.

Go fishing.

Meet friends near the lake.

Or simply sit outside and enjoy the view.

Mansfield Dam Park is right near Hudson Bend and offers public lake access, swimming areas, picnic areas, fishing, and a boat ramp.

You Don't Need to Own a Boat

Living near Lake Travis doesn’t mean you need to buy a boat.

Plenty of people enjoy the lake by swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing, or renting a boat when they want one.

And yes, living near the lake also increases your chances of eventually knowing someone with a boat.

The Sunsets Are Hard to Ignore

One of my favorite things about the Lake Travis area is the sunsets.

Many views around Hudson Bend face west over the lake.

On a clear evening, the sun drops behind the hills across the water and the entire sky can turn orange, pink, and gold.

If you lived near the California coast, that feeling may be familiar.

If you lived farther inland, having that kind of view close to home can feel completely different.

The Oasis on Lake Travis is nearby and is well known for its sunset views.

But after you live here for a while, you’ll probably find your own favorite place to watch the sun go down.

It might be a park.

A neighbor’s dock.

Your own patio.

Or somewhere you discover while driving around the lake.

You Actually Notice the Seasons

Southern California has great weather, but the seasons can blend together.

Central Texas feels more seasonal.

Spring brings wildflowers, including bluebonnets throughout the Austin area.

Summer is hot and lasts a while. This is when lake life really picks up.

Fall is one of my favorite times of year. The days are still comfortable, but the evenings cool down and outdoor patios become much more enjoyable.

Winter is usually fairly mild, although we can get some genuinely cold days and occasional freezes.

If you’re coming from Southern California, the biggest adjustment is probably summer.

Texas heat is real.

You learn pretty quickly to do outdoor activities earlier in the morning or later in the evening.

Outdoor Living Is a Big Part of the Lifestyle

When you look at homes around Hudson Bend and Lake Travis, you’ll notice a lot of attention goes into outdoor areas.

Covered patios.

Large decks.

Outdoor kitchens.

Pools.

Shade.

And homes positioned to take advantage of lake or hill country views.

These aren’t just nice extras.

People actually use these spaces.

For much of the year, your patio can feel like another living room.

If you're coming from a California tract home with a smaller yard and block walls, the extra outdoor space can be one of the biggest lifestyle changes.

One Thing to Watch When Touring Homes

Pay attention to which direction the backyard or patio faces.

A west-facing deck may give you an amazing sunset.

But it can also get very warm in the afternoon.

Covered patios, mature trees, and good shade matter more here than many California buyers expect.

Life Feels a Little Slower

Hudson Bend is mostly residential and sits on a peninsula along Lake Travis.

That means there isn’t a lot of traffic passing through just to get somewhere else.

The neighborhood can feel quieter than many parts of California.

You’re not surrounded by shopping centers or freeway traffic.

But you’re still close to Lakeway, Bee Cave, Four Points, restaurants, shopping, and everyday services.

You get some separation without feeling completely isolated.

The trade-off?

You will probably drive for most errands.

If you're used to walking to restaurants, coffee shops, or stores, Hudson Bend may take some adjusting.

You'll See Plenty of Wildlife

Seeing deer around Hudson Bend is completely normal.

You may see them walking through neighborhoods, standing in yards, or crossing the road.

You'll also notice plenty of birds and the occasional armadillo.

For a lot of people moving from California, this is part of the charm.

But there is one downside.

Deer also enjoy landscaping.

If you're planning a garden, it’s worth asking a local nursery about plants that are more deer-resistant before spending a lot of money.

You'll Start Checking the Lake Level

This is something I never really thought about until living around Lake Travis.

Lake Travis is a reservoir, so the water level changes depending on rainfall and drought conditions.

When you live here, you start noticing it.

Lake levels can affect boat ramps, docks, shoreline access, and even how waterfront property looks throughout the year.

If you're considering a waterfront home, don't judge the property only by the listing photos.

Ask what the shoreline looks like when the lake is higher and when it is lower.

That can make a big difference.

A Few Things Take Some Getting Used To

Hudson Bend has a lot to love, but I don't think people should move here expecting everything to be perfect.

A few things Californians usually notice:

  • Summer heat. Texas summers are long, hot, and more humid than most of Southern California.

  • Bugs. Fire ants are real. Shoes in the grass are a good idea.

  • Cedar season. Central Texas has its own allergy season, especially during the winter.

  • Driving. Most errands require a car.

  • Changing lake levels. Lake access and waterfront views can change depending on rainfall.

Those things aren't necessarily deal breakers.

But they're worth knowing before you move.

Is Hudson Bend a Good Fit After California?

Hudson Bend can be a great fit if you want more space, easy access to Lake Travis, outdoor living, and a quieter lifestyle.

It may not be the best fit if walkability is very important to you or if you want restaurants and shopping directly outside your neighborhood.

That’s why I always tell people that relocating isn’t just about finding a house.

It's about figuring out what you want your everyday life to look like.
